president obama and governor romney are harvard law graduates and good family men, when it comes to running a business and getting people back to work, which at least 23 million people are concerned about, governor romney is the man for the job and the des moines register is endorsing governor romney. >> huge in iowa, potentially. obviously completely stuck in the polls, the president seems to have had more people coming out in early voting but the statewide polling in iowa shows romney gaining. six electoral votes, it could come down to a margin of victory in the single digits. this one matters. it's also the case that the des moines register has gotten this endorsement correct in five of the -- all five of the last races. they endorsed al gore in 2000 and he got most of the popular vote. 80s pretty good bellwether. >> we're going to take a look at that in the next hour. the popular vote verses electoral vote. >> who in the office would be able to stimulate businesses, have a plan that gets small businesses back on their feet and therefore you have hiring. do you see that as the most impor

to likely voters. president obama 44%. governor romney, 51%. why after all this time does governor romney beat president obama when it comes to the question of who could best handle the economy? >> well, first of all, candy, there's a plethora of polls out there. >> a lot of them sort of show this, david. >> i actually prefer the cnn polls. i like the one you put out on friday where we were ahead in ohio and in states like ohio and elsewhere people know the reality, which is the president took tough steps to save our economy from freefall to save the auto industry, which governor romney would not have done, and he has a vision of how to move this economy forward. that will rebuild the middle class. that will -- and governor romney who runs around this country now saying i represent change doesn't represent change. he what he represents is a return to a failed task. >> still more feel think the governor would do better with the economy than the president. >> in that particular poll -- in that particular poll, candy, that may be the case, but in reality that's not the case. if you look at w

. governor romney today focused on fund-raising for the victims of the deadly storm while president obama canceled his events through wednesday to monitor the aftermath in response to hurricane sandy from the white house. we have team coverage here tonight. rick leventhal on the devastated jersey shore. shannon green on the storm damage in virginia, and ed henry tonight from the white house on the storm's political impact and the campaigns that are, tonight, frozen in place. many east coast residents heard or read weather forecasts and there's speculation about hybrid storms of the hurricane and nor'easter, perhaps, a super storm, as sandy approached, and they were understandably skeptical of what often turns out to be exaggerated meteorological storm forecasts. tonight they and millions of others find themselves suffering through what has turned out to be the mass devastation, wreckage, and misery that had been forecast for the eastern seaboard. fox news correspondent rick leventhal has our report from point pleasant, new jersey. >> reporter: point pleasant beach is one of many seaside c

president obama or governor romney to return to the campaign trail. they're operating with very little information. we can't know at this point just how devastating the damage might turn out to be. as a result i think both campaigns are being very cautious about what they do other than paying attention to the storm. >> woodruff: susan, what's your read on how the campaigns are dealing with all this? >> i think there are two things to look at. one is just the logistics, for instance, does this storm affect early voting that's going on now in ohio and north carolina and virginia? but a second thing is the larger atmospherics. what is the effect of having president obama go off the campaign trail back to the white house? the white house just this afternoon released a photo of him meeting in the situation room to get an update on storm damage. it seems to me that has an impact on a race where governor romney has been making some progress in recent days. does this kind of freeze things for where they are now. >> woodruff: that's what i wanted to ask you, susan. does one candidate or another
